Marla
Kavanaugh hails from the Antipodes ~ Dunedin, New Zealand. She
began her career on the stage at the tender age of five alongside
her identical twin sister Marissa. As the girls grew, so did their
popularity and their repertoire. Combining the music of their
childhood: Maori folksongs, musical theatre standards, popular
music and adding the classics they heard from their opera singer,
mother.
Marla has spent her entire life on the stage becoming a regular musical guest on many NZ daytime shows and on the concert stage in Australasia. Singing of course, all the music that inspired her, from her from cabaret to opera. It was a move to the United States in the 1990’s that narrowed her focus for a time and led her to a career of the mostly operatic roles in the States.
Marla’s is a voice that can successfully cross between musical genres, although she is tiny, her voice has the quality and power of a much larger person; many cannot believe the voice that pours out of her.
The combination of her beauty, her powerful instrument and her willingness to truly connect with her audience make her a most compelling artist. This sets her apart from her peers. She brings an energy and excitement to whatever she sings. She has been heralded in the San Francisco Chronicle as an “exciting young singer” and her voice, “the voice of a sorrowing angel.” Rich praise for a young woman of mixed musical and cultural heritage.
With the current interest for music, film and art from New Zealand, Marla Kavanaugh is poised to be seen and heard.
